Based in the heart of Brussels, just steps from the European Parliament, UEIL champions the interests of the European lubricants industry at the highest levels of EU policymaking.

Our Public Affairs Task Force leads UEIL’s advocacy efforts, ensuring the lubricants industry has a strong and respected voice in Brussels. We engage with the European Commission, European Chemicals Agency (ECHA), MEPs, Member States and key stakeholders to give them the technical insight and real-world expertise necessary for developing science-based effective legislation.

Our advocacy is built around two core pillars:

  1. Reputation Building – Raising UEIL’s profile with EU institutions and industry stakeholders.
  2. Targeted Engagement – Collaborating with UEIL committees to influence legislation on specific issues.

Participating in Commission Expert Groups and ECHA meetings

UEIL is a member of the following European Commission expert groups:

  • Group of experts on Ecodesign for Sustainable Products and Energy Labelling (‘the Ecodesign Forum’)
  • Forum for the Exchange of Information on Enforcement of the EU legislation on the approval and market surveillance of motor vehicles 
  • Working Group on Motor Vehicles 
  • Working Group on Agricultural Tractors 

UEIL is also an accredited ECHA stakeholders and participates in meetings and experts groups.

Meeting European policy makers

UEIL meets with Commission officials, MEPs, national authorities, ECHA officials and other European stakeholders on key policy issues.

Responding to EU consultations

Our Public affairs taskforce, in close collaboration with our committees, regularly responds to European Commission consultations on a wide range of topics including:

  • Chemicals policy
  • Eco-design
  • Circular economy
  • Bioeconomy
  • Access to vehicle repair and maintenance information

Organising events

In 2025, UEIL organised a landmark event at the European Parliament, offering members a unique opportunity to experience EU policymaking first hand. With speakers from the European Commission and Parliament, and participants from Member States, industry associations, and across the lubricants value chain, the event showcased the power of democracy, civic engagement, and proactive industry participation.
